AP Stat Unit 4:  Discrete and Continuous Random Variables

Chapter 7:  Random Variables

Chapter 8:  Binomial & Geometric Distributions

The central idea of Chapter 7 is that Random Variables are those which randomly take on certain values according to some known scheme such as a probability table (discrete random variables) or density curve (continuous random variables), and that based on that scheme we can find the mean and variance of the random variable.  The mean is also called the Expected Value of the variable.

Chapter 8 looks at two important random variable distributions:  Binomial and Geometric.  Both cases involve situations where there are only two possible outcomes, so they are often called success and failure.  The binomial distribution gives the probability of achieving a given number of successes in a specific number of trials.  The geometric distribution gives the probability of achieving the first success in a specific number of trials.
