BACK TO OVERVIEW
Returning North (2-5 Jan. 2000)
The second day of the new millenium we started to walk back towards Ushuaia. I had my southermost bath ever before we started to walk uphill away from the sea again. We hoped that we would see beavers, but the only thing we got to see was the beaver pond (see below). We ended up in a great field of grass next to a river where we pitched our tent. In the evening we went for yet another time beaver search without success.
The next couple of days were all about getting back north. First we started to walk towards Ushuaia on the car road and then got a lift with a nice argentinean guy. Back at Sonias place everyone was gone except Ariel. It felt a bit empty when everyone had gone. We had to go on too, though. On January 4 we went all the way back to Punta Arenas, mostly through the typical vast fields of Eastern Patagonia (see below).
Back in Punta Arenas we felt really welcome when Montserrat met us at the bus station. At her hostal we could feel the reminiscents of the Ushuaia people. Camilla and Martin had stayed in our room just before us, and we even met one of the Israeli guys, Yoav. An even more extreme reminiscent of our journey was the canadian guy we had met in Cabanaconde in Peru two and a half months earlier. Apparently, travellers tracks do cross each other at occasions.

January 5 was yet another day going back to where we came from. Yet again an old hostess of ours happens to meet us at the bus station at arrival. Seora Marias offered us a room in her sweet home.

Eventually, the next morning we headed for new grounds. The bus took us back to Argentina and the typical flat fields of Eastern Patagonia before reaching El Calafate, a tiny town close to the Andean mountain range.
