Montevideo is a cosmopolitan city with a slightly European appearance. The town is surrounded by the Atlantic water (see above) and densely filled with squares (or Plazas). The most famous square is probably the Plaza de Independencia (Square of Independence) with its odd architecture (see below). Close to here we managed to find the reasonably priced hotel Sols as hosted by the nice and talkative Rachel.
Our stay in the capital was mostly about walking around in the squares and streets. The first day we were quite surprised to find the comic paper 'Tintin - Det svarta guldet' (in Swedish!) on one of the plazas. The other day we went a bit further away too see the Palacio Legislativo, the street market close to the University and the Palacio Municipal (with great views from the 22nd floor, see above). The rest of the time we mostly relaxed at the hotel, playing cards and surfing on the Internet. The next day we went west along the Ro de la Plata for five days of bathing in the smaller town Colonia del Sacramento. |
