Colonia del Sacramento
Colonia were among the first settlements during the Spanish colonization. Accordingly, the older parts of the town have some historical and touristic value (see above). Nowadays Colonia also serves as a cheaper alternative to Punta del Este as seaside resort. Sand covers the long beaches along the Ro de la Plata that is brownish from the Paran outflow.

We stayed in the Hotel Espaol for five days and five  nights. We had a relaxing time, doing nothing but sleeping late in the mornings, visiting beaches, cooking the last leftover powder dishes from Patagonia in the hotel garden (or visiting our favourite pizzeria and panaderia to get something more tasty), listening to our newly bought live CDs and playing cards in the bed. As always in Uruguay Anna happened to burn herself in the sun. Consequently, she mostly preferred to sit in the shadow during our beach sessions (see below). The southern sunsets over Ro de la Plata were accordingly most enjoyable. At the same time the beautiful evening light over the brownish water reminded us about what was about to happen. Leaving Uruguay on the ferry over the same water would mark the end of our long adventure in South America.
