Ancud (8-9 Dec. 1999)
In Ancud we managed to find a 'casa de familia' with a locally nationalistic daughter of the house that amused us by describing all places in the neighbourhood as 'superlindo' (superbeautiful), a typical Chilean expression that was even more typical for her. As it would show the next day, the expression hadn't been misused too badly. The weather was superbrilliant and the town really appeared 'superlindo'. The fortress next to the Pacific offered some cultural value and the fried salmon was exquisite for South American standards. Of course, we had to take the obligatory stroll in the beautiful weather. The hill offered magnificent views over the Pacific and Ancud (see below).
Even more impressive were the bushes that appeared more yellow than anything we had seen before and the great views of the mainland volcanoes (Volcan Osorno towards the north, see above, and the entire horizon filled with snow-covered Andes peaks towards the east, see below). We headed for the same mainland in the evening.
