[12-7-1999] from Jimmy Allen Hicks; Uncle John is right, he (Jaret) loved his whiskey.  He would get a bottle and hide it from Mit, that is what we called our grandmother, in the chicken house.  She would find it sooner or later and then go up one side of Jaret and back down the other side.  He would just find another hiding place.

[10-1999]  John, her brother, says that the little girl died from starvation.  When she got sick, the doctor told them not to let her eat.  After she died, they found a peanut in her nostril.

[11-28-1999]  Lillian, her sister, remembers her family always talking about how precocious Inet was.  She talked at a very early age, had an advanced vocabulary, and never met a stranger.  She says the child's death was from blood poisoning.

John says his daddy could kill a 5th of whiskey quicker than anybody he ever saw.  Uncle Jaret was everyone's favorite uncle.  He was jolly and full of mischief.  He gave many of the nieces and nephews their nicknames, including "Aunt Monkey".  One time, he sent John to the barbershop to deliver some whiskey.  John stuck it down the waist of his pants, and just as he got in sight of the barber shop, the bottle slipped down the leg of his breeches and fell out on the ground and broke.  John says he just kept walking like nothing had happened and went on back home and told his daddy.  Asked if he got a flogging, he said his daddy said, "It's happened to me before."

[12-7-1999] from Jimmy Allen Hicks;  Grandpa Jaret owned a single barrel shotgun, which I still have, that I killed my first squirrel with.  I was small and the gun knocked me down.  I can still hear him laughing.  When he died, he left it to me.

[12-19-1999]  I lived with grandma Mit and grandpa Jaret the last half of my senior year in High School.  Mit could walk through a room full of eggs and never break one.  No matter what time I got in from galavantin, around 6:00 a.m. I got woke up and breakfast was ready.  6 banty eggs, bacon, biskets, and jelly.  I ate about 756 of those things.  I have seen Jaret set an whittle for hours on the gallery and wave at everybody that passed.  They would usually honk as they went by.

[11-28-1999]  Bonnie relates how her g-pa Jaret taught her how not to chew tobacco.  She kept begging for a chew of his Beechnut tobacco.  He relented, and made her chew for a long time.  She got so sick on the tobacco that she never wanted to chew it again.
