PORTLAND
The city of Portland is divided into 4 quadrants (NE,NW,SE,SW), the boundaries being the Willamette River (East/West) and Burnside (North/South).

Downtown Portland fronts the Western side of the river.

My home is in the SE quadrant, 14 blocks East of the river.  The house is two blocks South of one main road (Hawthorn Blvd.)  and 8 blocks North of the next main road (Division St.).

Our neighborhood is called Ladd's Addition, within the Abernathy area of town.  It is a mostly residential, safe and quiet neighborhood with shops, a movie theatre and a couple each of big chain and natural-food grociery stores within about a mile of us.

Oh, there is a fifth area; N. Portland.  I think it's mostly an industrial district.

TRANSPORTATION

The local public transportation system is called
Tri-met.  To save surf-time there are a few buttons at the bottom of the page here.

We have excellent bus service to and from Downtown during regular business commuting hours.  A bus comes by every 15 minutes and the trip takes about 10 to 15 minutes to the City Center.

If you anticipate needing to travel very widely though, you might consider renting a car, or look into a service I've seen advertised around town:  FlexCar.
