Ngomongo-Kenya

Hope and Vision School, Kenya, situated in Ngomongo village in Kasarani division on the outskirts of Nairobi. It was started in 2004 with only 8 children. Today we have over 40 children and it is only the limitation of resources that is currently keeping the numbers down.

The school provides education and food to children of the poorest families in this area. Sadly Ngomongo is a poverty stricken area, and most of the children in this area are needy and there is constant pressure from parents to take in more children. Again limited resources make this impossible and we are forced to sadly turn away more children than admit to the school.

Ngomongo is a poor slum region, with a high crime rate, HIV/Aids is prevalent, with poor social amenities and most of the residents are at the bottom of the social ladder. These are people to whom an education for their children is still regarded as a luxury. As a result most of the children from Ngomongo grow up without a chance to be educated. The principal struggle for the community is basic survival with education taking a back seat.

Like many of the Nairobi slums, Ngomongo is not in the Nairobi City development plans, as a result, buildings are haphazardly constructed and the city council does not provide services, such as schools, health, water, sewage disposal, electricity etc. It is largely considered as an illegal settlement.

In 2005 the Kenyan Government introduced free primary school education, but not all children have been able to take advantage of this. There is only one primary school within walking distance of Ngomongo, and the children who cannot afford basic school accessories such as school uniforms and books are still not allowed in schools. This effectively locks out most of the Ngomongo children.

It is in this background that Hope and Visions school was founded, to try and give hope to as many children as possible. Growth has however been slow due to the lack of resourses.

To be able to expand and cope with the ever increasing number of children seeking admission, the school is actively seeking partners and well wishers to assist in its expansion programme.
