Lesson 2: Characterization

After classroom rules are established, students will begin exploring character traits. This introductory lesson provides students with a basic understanding of characterization and connects this knowledge to characters from Dream Chaser stories.

Objective: Students will discover that character traits define a person's unique personality. Using this knowledge, students will generate a list of character traits, define them, and cite examples of story characters who possess these traits.

Materials: Dream Chasers (Fifth Grade Reading Basal)- Volume 1, Teachers Manual pages 68-69, Student workbook page 20, Skills Practice #15.

Procedure:
1. This lesson provides a definition of characterization and practice identifying traits in characters from Dream Chaser basal stories.
2. Connect characterization concept by identifying traits of characters in Kingdom with No Rules, No Laws, and No King (e.g. Benjamin is industrious because he developed a list of rules for the kingdom.) -- Lesson 1
3. Provide guided practice by reviewing Dream Chasers workbook page 20 with students.
4 . Review Character Traits worksheet with students, which will be used and added to throughout the unit. Highlight difference between feelings and character traits.
5. Distribute and assign Dream Chasers Practice sheet #15 to be completed independently.

Evaluation:
Dream Chasers Practice sheet #15 will be used as assessment tool for this lesson.
