About My Writing
I love writing for two major reasons. First of all, it is the most affordable and portable art form I have. I can create a character, or even a whole story, in my mind at any time. I also love writing because it allows me to know so many people and situations that are impossible for me to experience in my own life. It allows me to see the people in these situations from their perspective, and teach that perpective to others. Maintaining that open-mindedness and compassion is, in my opinion, the responsibility of a good artist.
I started writing poems in the fourth grade. In sixth grade, my friends and I started our own school newspaper as part of "Hoosiers Helping Homested," our school's hurricane relief project, which raised money to buy new supplies for students at a school in Florida. I took journalism class in high school, and later helped write and publish my church's monthly newsletter. In all, I have written poetry, short stories, speeches, articles and feature articles, an editorial, essays, and scripts.
Although I love the process of writing in any form, writing fiction is the most enjoyable to me. The plot is always challenging, and the study of characters goes hand-in-hand with my other true love ... acting.
I do believe in a story having some direction before it is put to page, but I also believe that if you know the characters well enough, they will communicate their story to you. My writing process usually starts with a lot of deep thought, a major belief or emotion about something, and some quiet pretending - putting myself in the character's shoes.
