My Interests:

Computers Section

My love for computers began when I made my First Holy Communion in school. With the money I received from the day, I bought an Amstrad 6128, which was very hi-tech at the time and was acclaimed because it used a disk drive in place of the previously used tape drives. The difference between the two was that a disk may take up to 10/15 seconds to load, whereas the tape could take anywhere up to half an hour. Through a contact my Dad had I was able to get my hands on hundreds of games for the Amstrad, which got me hooked onto its usage. I began programming the games for which the code was listed at the back of the manual and it was right then I knew that computers would become an important aspect of my life in the future.

After this, my father purchased a 386 machine with a whopping 4 megs of RAM and a 50mb hard disk. It was cool, it ran Windows 3.1, but we usually used DOS 6.2 as Windows was a bit sluggish. The machine acquired a virus via a magazine's cover disk and this allowed me to mess around with re-installation of operating systems and systems software. We then moved on to a 486DX machine, which we had through the whole Pentium/Pentium MMX life cycle, and it wasn't until the release of the Pentium II that we finally upgraded.

Since then I've had several different machines: the Pentium II 350, my own PII 450, a PIII 600, a K6-II 500 which I built myself, a PIII 800 laptop and now I own a P4 2.66GHz laptop. All machines had plenty of RAM for the time period, usually 256mb, and my current laptop has 512mb. I also have a fine collection of peripherals: a digital camera, a USB floppy drive, a USB SD card reader, USB trackball, USB sound card, USB MIDI device, USB printer, Music Jukebox (Creative Nomad 30GB), and more.

My experience with computers doesn't simply entail owning a computer, however. I have been experienced in HTML (now XHTML) since 1994. I am proficient with most web technologies, including CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), Flash, PHP, Apache Web Server, MySQL, JavaScript and a bit of Perl. Aside from Web Design, I have experience with various operating systems: DOS 5/6.2/6.22, Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP, Linux (all distros and versions), FreeBSD (all versions), OpenBSD 2.2 and NetBSD. I have also experimented with BeOS and QNX. I have a tiny bit of knowledge in programming languages like C, C++ and Python. This year I have learned a great deal of Visual Basic, which has furthered my understanding of programming in general.
