What is CSS?

What exactly is CSS? CSS is short for "cascading style sheets". CSS can be used to control the style of an XHTML document without affecting its structure. The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) released cascading style sheet language in 1996 to help bridge the gap between structure and style.

Style sheets contain certain rules that define the appearance of elements within an XHTML document. The great thing about CSS is that it saves you time. If you want to make a change to the look at your pages format, all you have to do is change the style sheet, and the changes “cascade” to your other pages without you having to change each individual page.
