Matthew is listed as a voter in Jefferson Twp, Scioto Co. Ohio. He enlisted in the 91st Ohio Volunteer infantry Co. C Aug 4, 1862 and Mustered in Sep 7, 1862 at Camp Iroton, Ohio. He was a private and listed as age 25 years. - wounded on Sep 19, 1864 in the Battle of Opequan VA - mustered out on June 24, 1865.

Matthew and Sophia are both buried in the Lucasville Cemetery, Valley Twp, Scioto Co. Ohio. After Matthew's death, Sophia moved to San Jose, Mason Co. IL to be with her children, but died shortly after. She was taken back to Ohio and buried next to Matthew.
