GI Party, 3rd Platoon, Co F., 11th Regt., 5th Inf Div Ft Jackson, SC  Sept 1947.  All previous week, Platoon Sgt Marwede promised a GI party come Wednesday evening.  Man! I think I'm gonna like this mans Army, after only one week we get a party!!  Bet there will be girls from Columbia, music, chow and drinks.  Surprise!! Old ex Navy swabbie who had enlisted in the US Army as a private said, "this looks just like clean sweep down fore and aft" !! He sure knew what he was talking about, as the good ex "Kraut" Platoon Sgt grabbed a couple recruits to haul in soap, mops, buckets, brushes etc.
Back l/r: Cleo Robertson, Altus, OK. (Direct to Korea from Basic, died on sentry duty one week after arrival:  Matthews, Ark:  Mulkey, from ??: Poore, NYC: Morgan, NE USA: Landry, LA: Rader, Wash DC??: Miller, ??: Needham, ??:
Front l/r: Jim Lynn, Wayne, OK: Kelloway, ??: Watts, ??: Keese, ??: Keith, ??:
Rifle Range + 1  week, Old Soldier.      I had been shanghied and detailed as  11th Regt bugler (simply because I played a damned slide trombone in the HS band) - about as much alike as the directions of up and down - but did that matter to the US Army - heck no, just make noise, which I did - got me out of half day training every day except for rifle range week.,  Troops  made me stand out by pine tree and threw rocks at me - bummer!!!!!

Last photo as "innocent" farm kid, Pauls Valley, Ok, 7-1947.
At this time I was reciting, over an over the classic "Mom, there   is a great big, blue-eyed wide world out there - and I gotta see  what it has in store for this kid.  So, with another Wayne, Okla. farm Kid (who was running away from home, he got one of his cuz to forge parents signature)), we went to the Purcell, Okla.  US Army Recruiting Station, to find a Corporal desperate for a couple of fresh recruits.
Much to just about everyones surprise in Wayne, Okla. - including us, we found ourselves on a train bound for Ft Jackson, SC, US Army, Infantry Basic training and  the start of a lifes career - for me at least.
Recruited into the Army Security Agency by a Red Headed US Army Technical Sergeant - I had intended to enlist in the US Air Corp, pilot training - and would have made that goal except for the enticing tale spun by that smooth talker!!!!
