Matías Herrera

Matias Herrera was born to Domingo Herrera and Maria del Refugio Herrera who lived on an Hacienda near the Nuevo Leon border in Coahuila. Matias' parents are buried in Valladares, Coahuila. They must have been born circa 1800, and may have come from Lampazos Nuevo Leon (my theory).

Matias was born about 1819, possibly in Candela,Coahuila as that was where he was from, and he later ended up as one of the original founders of Jimenez, Coahuila. He must have gone to the San Antonio area in the mid 1800's since his son, Pantaleon Herrera Sr. marries Santos Cadena Valdez in Pleasanton (Atascosa County near Bexar County) on March 5,1873 where some of their children are born. The rest were born in Jimenez or perhaps even in San Matias. Matias Herrera evidently bought some land near Jimenez and it was named Hacienda San Matias, after him.

Matias Herrera, his wife Candida Sanchez, and their son, Pantaleon plus another son, Julian, were on the list of founders for Jimenez and these people were said to have been escorted by the Mexican Army from San Antonio to Jimenez, Coahuila.

Matias Herrera died after 1886 and Candida Sanchez died January 30,1916 in Del Rio, TX from Smallpox complications (in 1914). Pantaleon Herrera Sr. died 1900 in Jimenez, Coahuila and Santos Valdez died October 15,1915 in Del Rio, TX.
