A outbreak alert was posted last week for a worm that exploits Microsoft's Plug and Play Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (MS05-039). The W32.Zotob.E worm and the W32.Esbot.A worm and different variations (as classified by Symantec) are currently infecting computers around the world. These worms are responsible for causing disruptions at The New York Times and CNN. These worms affect Windows 2000 platforms but install on Windows 98, ME, and XP machines and seek out Windows 2000 systems to infect. Be sure your system has all Windows updates and be sure to have a firewall (other than Windows) running.

- Many home users think that PC repair is out of their league. Only those truly tech-savvy individuals should be. Truth is, the average user can accomplish many simple repair tasks without having to call a technician. Most people don't familiarize themselves with their computer well enough to troubleshoot effectively. That is the key. Most people use Windows XP Home Edition, some still use Windows ME or 98. TIP FROM THE TECH
Currently, phishing scams are the biggest culprit for identity theft. Unsuspecting users open an email that appears legit and asks for their personal information. Usually, that information is sent to a thief who then uses it to clean out accounts or steal your identity.

TECH'S JOURNAL

One of the most satisfying things for a technician is when we are able to diagnose a problem and fix it on the spot. Sometimes though, we have to accept defeat and realize that the amount of time it would take us to fix something probably isn't worth all the money in the world. Nothing compares to the look on a customer's face when you have to tell them that the hard drive failed and there is no way to recover their data. It's almost like telling them that one of their children passed away. That's why it is critical to make backups either on CD's, a jumpdrive, network-attached storage, or an external hard drive. Philosophers say that a computer may cost you $500, but the data on it is worth much, much more. If that is the case in your household, I urge you to go out to your local retail store and pick up some medium to backup that data on. I use an automatic backup system on a small server in my house. Any changes that are made to files I have backed up are immediately saved. If you're interested, go to www.mirra.com and check out the service.

HARDWARE CORNER
- If you have an existing network in your home or office, a way to eliminate wiring for good is to purchase a wireless router. Similar to a hard-wired router, wireless allows desktop and notebook computers to connect without the hassle of setting up wires all over the home or office.
