Dodge City Legend head coach Mike Shepherd has resigned to take an assistant coaching job at Northern Illinois University.
Legend general manager Tom Nelson confirmed receiving Shepherd's resignation earlier in the week. Shepherd, who is an advance scout for the Atlanta Hawks, took the Legend head coaching job in March.
"Mike did call me this week and told me he was taking a Division I job," said Nelson. "I couldn't be happier for him and I've been working hard to find somebody to replace him real fast."
One possibility is the Legend re-hiring Kent Davision, who resigned as head coach after leading the team to the 2000 United States Basketball League championship for another head coaching job.
His tenure as head coach of the Fort Wayne Fury was short-lived as the Continental Basketball Association folded in February.
"It's obvious that we would talk to Kent after the folding of the CBA and everyone knows he's available," said Nelson. "But I also understand that he has the possibility of a lucrative deal inVenezuela.
"I've talked to a bunch of coaching candidates in the last three days and hope to have a decision early in the week."
