Dodge City Legend head coach Kent Davison was named the United States Basketball League's Coach of the Year after guiding the team to a league-best 22-8 record.

"It's a nice honor to have," said Davison who was in Salina getting the team ready for the USBL Post-Season Festival. "I think it speaks highly of the organization and what we accomplished this season."

It was Davison's first professional basketball head coaching assignment. He was an assistant for the Fort Wayne Fury of the Continental Basketball Association before taking the Legend job.

"When you surround yourself with good people, good things happen to you," he said. "I surrounded myself with (assistant) coach (Mike) Dolin and (assistant coach) Charles (Klafk) and with good players.

"The other thing is that I have a tolerant wife. She puts up with a lot of stuff and was gracious enough to put up with the fact that I wasn't going to be around for 2 1/2 months and that said a lot of stuff about her."

Davison said he wasn't surprised about the success of the Legend in its inaugural season.

"We kind of had an idea of who we wanted to bring in," he said. "The whole thing was whether they were going to come in or not. We got Sean (Colson), we got Darrin (Hancock) and we got Artie (Griffin), then the other pieces started to fall together. We knew then that we would be good."
