USBL DRAFT
ValleyDawgs trade up to get La Salle's Victor Thomas with No. 2 pick

Donnie Carr [his former teammate La Salle and current 'Dawgs player] told me a lot about the league and coach, that you get to run up and down and that it's an exciting brand of basketball. I like to play like that.

"Being the No. 2 pick, I'm excited that people think that highly of me."

The expansion Maryland Mustangs selected George Mason's George Evans with the No. 1 overall pick. Greg Springfield of Hofstra was the No. 3 pick by the Brooklyn Kings and Atlantic City selected Kevin Wilkins of Seton Hall fourth.

Jackie Stiles from the Southwest Missouri State women's team was picked with the 19th overall pick by Dodge City, and Lafayette College center Frank Barr, a 7-footer, was selected in the fifth round by Atlantic City.

The ValleyDawgs were scheduled to pick ninth in the first round, but moved up by trading that pick and their fourth-round pick (36th overall) to the Oklahoma Storm for the No. 5 pick. The 'Dawgs then traded the No. 5 pick and the rights to forward Ronnie Fields, a member of the team the last two summers, to the Lakeland Blue Ducks in exchange for their No. 2 pick.

Why all the moves? They were just trying to beat nemesis Atlantic City to the punch, according to Pennsylvania director of public relations Joe Heyer. A.C. had the fourth pick and wasrumored to want Thomas.

Thomas ended up with the team he coveted, and a coach he has long admired.

"It's a good feeling to be able to play under him," said Thomas, who grew up in North Philadelphia, where he attended Northeast High before transferring to John Neuman of the Catholic League for his final two seasons.

"I never met him before," said Thomas of Dawkins. "I saw him dunk, break backboards, so having a chance to play for him is pretty good. I want to show him a couple dunks that I have too."

Pennsylvania's other draft picks included Temple's Quincy Wadley with the 18th overall pick, College of Charleston's Jodi Lumpkin at No. 27, 6-10 center Nakiea Miller at No. 45 and Penn State's Gyasi ClineHeard with their final pick, No. 54 overall.

Dawkins was thrilled with all his selections, but especially Thomas.

"He will be easier to coach because he knows what I'm telling him is right," Dawkins said. "Some guys come in thinking they know it all before they do anything. This is a kid who comes in with a great attitude and open mind.

"I didn't draft anybody who I didn't think would listen this year. Last year, I took guys that were players. This year, I had to get guys that will fit into the team concept."

The Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs knew whom they wanted most and they made all the chess moves earlier in the day to ensure they got him in Tuesday night's United States Basketball League draft.

Head coach Darryl Dawkins made the announcement at the ValleyDawgs' draft headquarters at the Budweiser Tap Room at the Holiday Inn in Fogelsville that they had selected La Salle's
Victor Thomas with the second-overall pick.

Thomas, a 6-7 swingman, was in attendance and proudly accepted a Valley Dawgs jersey with No. 1 on the back.

"I wanted to come here because of the opportunity to contribute," said Thomas, who ranked third in the Atlantic 10 last season with a 19.7 per game scoring average. He also averaged 6.8 rebounds and shot 44.2 percent from the field.

"A lot of people don't know about me," Thomas said. "I'm still a secret.
