USBL DRAFT
By JEFFREY FLANAGAN - Columnist
Date: 04/11/01

If you were thinking that the Dodge City Legend of the United States Basketball League drafted Jackie Stiles solely as a publicity stunt, well, you're probably half right.

The Legend, which drafted Stiles in the second round Tuesday, doesn't expect Stiles to try to make a point and play full time against men in the USBL.

For one thing, Stiles would be giving up a fair chunk of money - rookies make about $2,500 total for the league's eight-week season while Stiles is in line to make more than $46,000 if she is one of the top eight players taken in the WNBA draft next week.

No, we've heard that what the Dodge City Legend has in mind is simply honoring Stiles by having her play in an exhibition game April 27 and then in Dodge City's season opener April 29. After that, Stiles would head off to WNBA land. Stiles has a special connection with the Dodge City Legend: Her uncle, Michael Morrison, is one of the Legend's owners, and Stiles attended several Legend

games last season.

Stiles grew up about an hour from Dodge City in Claflin, Kan. Claflin is having a special "Jackie Stiles Day" on Saturday, and the Legend will be giving her a Legend uniform.

The honors don't stop there. The U.S. Postal Service will make available a pictorial cancellation bearing Stiles' name in Claflin on Saturday.

Those mailing a letter that day, or those who stop by a temporary post office station there, will receive the pictorial cancellation: "Jackie Stiles Hometown Station April 14, 2001."
