The Value of Names

JEST concludes its 2006/7 season in June with Jeffrey Sweet's dramatic comedy, "The Value of Names."

Set in the early 1980’s, the focus of the play shifts back thirty years earlier to the height of the McCarthy Era. Benny Silverman, a well-known actor, finds his career torn apart when his best friend, Leo Greshen, names him as a Communist to the House Un-American Activities Committee. Benny cannot forgive Leo. The old wound resurfaces as Benny’s actress daughter, Norma, is about to star in a play whose director takes ill and is replaced by ... Leo. Comedy melds with drama in the humor and sharp dialogue that follow.

The London Times has referred to "The Value of Names" as being “…moral comedy in the best American liberal tradition.” During the past several years it has been performed in major U.S. cities to high acclaim. The directing vision of Leah Stoller along with the impressive talents of David Glickman as Benny, Marvin Meital as Leo and new immigrant Dede Jacobs Komisar as Norma, bring this thought provoking and witty drama to life.

“The Value of Names” will be performed at the Hirsh Theatre in Jerusalem on Thursday June 14 (5pm and 8:30pm), Wednesday June 20 (5pm and 8:30pm) and Thursday June 21 (8pm).
