| Choosing Fish Just like you wouldn't live with just anybody, neither will fish.
There are many types of tropical fish, but we can categorize them here as - Solitary - like the male betta
- Aggressive solitary - again like bettas,they usually attack other tankmates.
- Community - likes company of others
- Schooling- likes the company of its species
- Aggressive community - African cichlids like to be together but bully each other. Balance and a watchful eye are necessary. They also get big. Not for the beginner.

| For beginners community fish are best, unless tank size prohibits that. If you can only have a 1 to 2 gallon tank, I highly recommend bettas or gouramis - not just any gourami as some gouramis can get four inches. I mean honey gouramis - they are adorable little fish and only get to about 1.5 inches.
Both bettas and gouramis are special in that they do not need aeration, since they breathe air at the surface of the water.
