| About Neuroblastoma: Neuroblastoma is a cancerous tumor that arises from the tissues that form the sympathetic nervous system. It is an aggressive malignancy that tends to spread fast to other areas of the body. The sympathetic nervous system performs automatically in response to the environment and our emotions. An example of this system at work: when you become suprised or angry; your heart speeds up, and you sweat. The adrenal gland (part of the sympathetic nervous system) is where this cancer begins over half the time. These glands (we have two - thank goodness ) are located just above each kidney. The adrenal glands have two purposes: - fluid and electrolyte balance - producing hormones in response to stress So it's a good thing that Aiden has another adrenal gland, or his body would not be able to perform these functions. The average age of diagnosis is two years, and the majority of children are diagnosed before the age of five years. Long term survival for children with metastatic (wide spread) disease at diagnosis remains poor. Is there a cause? Apparently not. There are some other rare diseases that are connected to neuroblastoma, but there has been no evidence to support any environmental causes or any direct genetic predisposition. | Please view the Videos' of Jack White from St. Judes hospital. Aiden has the same type of cancer. Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Aiden has a tumor in his head that can not be removed. His cancer is not responding to treatment like Jacks is. It is nice, to have some hope. |

| Aiden is in his eleventh month of treatment for a disease called neuroblastoma. He has had extensive chemotherapy, radiation and a stem cell transplant. After all of the treatment, tests were done to see if the stem cell transplant beat the cancer. It did not. The cancer is still widespread in Aiden's body. Aiden has completed two rounds, 5 days each of the new maintenance chemotherapy. They gave him two drugs, topotecan and cyclophosphamide, which will hopefully prevent the disease from spreading further. They don't seem hopeful that these drugs will cure the disease, but we are hoping that these drugs will decrease the amount of neuroblastoma in his body so that Aiden could become eligable for new treatment options. |

| The treatments are on three week cycles. One week he gets chemo, then two weeks off. Aiden has been doing fairly well on this new treatment he is on. The first round was bad, he was sick, (feeling nautious for the whole week after the chemotherapy). We give him anti - nausea medication for that, and then he is back to playing and running around. He also had low platelets and needed blood transfusions after the counts came down during the second week. He needed an extra three weeks to recover from this. The second round was better. They lowered the dose of chemo. He was not nearly as nauseated and needed less blood transfusions. Aiden will continue to be on this type of chemo, for about nine months. He starts his next 5 days of chemo on Monday May 9th. |
