In 1980, a girl by the name of TLO was found in a Lavatory, smoking. A vice principal searched TLO's purse and found cigarettes, cigarette rolling paper, weed, a pipe, and two letters indicating that she had been dealing weed at school. After being taken to the police station, TLO confessed to dealing weed at her school. In a juvenile court, the judge found TLO to be a delinquent and sentenced her to a year of probation. However, an appeal to the New Jersey State Supreme Court held that the vice principal's search of her purse was a violation of her 4th and 14th Amendment rights, meaning that the evidence was found illegally and could not be used against her in court. For resolution. the State of New Jersey asked The US Supreme Court for Help.
