| THE DUNHAM-SINGLETARY BRANCH |
| Although the family has been in New Jersey since the mid 1600's it has been quite a chore to locate information on our grgrgrgrandparents. I have posted back as far as Francis Singletary b 1559 in Lincolnshire England who married Agnes Unkown. Listed below is our family's possible lineage. We are sure of just about all with the exception of time in the 1700's where we can not find documentation. Bear with me for a while in the future and it will be resolved. Currently waiting to hear back from the State of New Jersey regarding BMD certificates to resolve the question. Listed below is what I believe is our lineage with the Dunham-Singletary name. 1) Francis Singletary b 1559 married Agnes Unknown b 1565 Lincolnshire England 2) Richard Singletary b 1585 married 1) Goodwife bef 1637 2) Susannah Cooke b 1616 in Salisbury Ma 3) Jonathan Singletary b November 17, 1639 married Mary Bloomfield b January 15, 1641-42 in Newbury Ma in 1660 came to Woodbridge NJ in 1671 NOTE: Jonathan name change of Singletary to Dunham was never kept a secret. Most records that have been found show Jonathan Singletary alias Dunham or Jonathan Dunham Singletary. Story told by grandmother is that Richard Singletary, Jonathan's father was not a Singletary but actually the son who was heir to the House of Dunham. There were two branches of the Dunham family and in the case of the death of the last male heir the title of estate would pass to the nearest relative in the younger branch. According to what was told on the nanny's deathbed, she was hired to murder the child but could not bring herself to do so. Instead she hide the child while a search was done, when not found made an escape. Traveled by ship, both hungry and tired making their way to new World, upon reaching and she deserted the child returning to England. Because child was alone she gave him the name Single-tary. As far as this has not been proven sufficiently to satisfy any English court or put him in possession of any property left from the House of Dunhams, but has been passed down through generations and assumes that of being true from a legal document that supposibly appears in the archives of Massachusetts, recorded in 1702. The family is referred to as the DONHAM ALIAS SINGLETARY. If you have heard this please say so when signing book Jonathan is buried on the site of the family home which is now the rectory of theTrinity Episcopal Church.
