May 10, 1864 he was wounded in the left leg by a minnie ball at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. He was admitted to Jackson Hospital of Richmond, VA. Mary Jernigan was the youngest child of Samuel and Rachel (Hand) Jernigan, Sr. She was born 31 Mar 1820 and died 23 Dec 1902 after becoming the only sibling who lived a long full life in Anson Co., N.C. Samuel Jernigan, Jr., her brother, died there at the age of 51 and all others migrated and died elsewhere. Mary married Thomas Calvin Streater. He was born 10 Aug 1810 and died 8 Jul 1869. Their known children were Margaret J., Rachel A., William B., Julia A., Martha and John. Census dates and spacing of ages indicate there could be more children. Dates supplied by relative and sent to Laona by Coit A. McDonald, Jr. of College Park, GA. (Later efforts to contact Mr. McDonald brought no results from his address of the 1960's. If anyone knows his whereabouts or his kin, please contact Laona.)
The late Marion Ratliff of Morven, N.C., wrote Laona years ago, "My mother always remembered Mary (Jernigan) Streater wearing a bonnet and smoking clay pipes which cost 2 for a penny." She outlived her kin.
Widow Rachel (Hand) Jernigan signed a 1844 gift deed, "to my daughter Mary Streater and her husband Thomas Streater......will pay up certain mortgage held by son-in-law Thomas Streater...he agrees to support and maintain during residence....and remainder of my life....to Mary all my household goods....". The deed, Anson Co., N.C., Deed Bk 11, page 322; 22 Jun 1844, included "Negroes (five named) deeded to Streaters" and is witnessed by C.C. Masket, D.D. Daniel, July term 1844. Rachel remained there until her death 17 April 1851.
