Three Daughters of Samuel & Rachel (Hand) Jernigan
By Laona Hagenstad

The original article on Samuel and Rachel's family was published in the Jernigan Connection, issue seven, dated October 1993.  Articles on some of their children can also be found in other issues.  Nancy was in issue eight, dated April 1994; Henry B. was in issue nine, dated September 1994; Judith was in issue eleven, dated October 1995; John Hand was in issue twelve, dated April 1996; and Samuel, Jr. was in issue thirteen, dated October 1996.  The following are three more of the eleven children of Samuel and Rachel Hand Jernigan.
Manila (or Uniala or Mahala) Jernigan was born in the early 1800's in Anson County, N.C.  She married John Clark(e) of the same county.  They disappear after the December 1838 signing of Samuel Jernigan, Sr. estate settlement (Anson County, NC Deed Bk 10 pp 41.2)  Laverne Stanford of Ripley, MS found a John Clark in the Henry County, TN, census 1840 and 1850  that fits this family.  The 1850 census (9th Distr. P.659 household 102) lists John Clark 49, Benjamin 22, Rachel 20, Christopher 18, Lucy 16, Sarah 14, Margaret 12, and Susan 10 with all born in N.C.  Assuming this is the correct family, Manila has died, but note the Jernigan names and Christopher is an early Anson County, Clark name.  Jesse and Thomas Jernigan, sons of William Jernigan, Jr., were former residents of Anson County and nearby in Robinson County, TN.  Manila has been a difficult person to trace.  Her name was found only once in that deed settlement and then it was difficult to read.  If anyone knows of this family or has access to the 1850 Henry County, TN, Mortality Schedule and finds Manila listed,  contact me at 1526 W. Fairmount Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85015.

Sarah Pinckney Jernigan was born about 1816 in Anson Co., N.C.  There is no record of Sarah being married to a Pinckney, but her name in the 1838 Samuel Jernigan, Sr., estate settlement, lists her husband as Holland Hainey.  Haney was originally spelled Haynie, later changed to Hainey and then Haney in records after 1840 according to Jerry Haney of Denver, N.C., whose line is through Holland Hainey's second marriage.  He was able to provide me with the names of Holland and Sarah's children who were Thomas, Margaret and Samuel Jernigan Hainey.
Sarah and Holland lived in Chester Co., S.C., when Sarah died between the 1838 and 1840 census.  Holland moved back to Anson Co., N.C., and remarried to Delilah McPherson and their issue: John Allen born 1842, Richmond Pierson born 1847, and Catherine Haney born 1849.  Holland Hainey died after the 1880 Anson Co. census.

Sarah's son, Thomas, was born 1833 and later census listed him as James Thomas Haney.  He is in the 1880 Lauderdale Co., TN, census with wife Mary E. and several children.  Margaret was born about 1835 in Anson Co., N.C.  She married a Copeland before 1850 and is lost later somewhere in Missouri.  More is known about Samuel Jernigan Hainey because of his C.C.A. service record and family data.  Jerry Haney provided a sheet titled, "Civil War Profiles", dated August 1983 by Jo Ann Stevenson.  The unknown source was given without notations.  National Archives may have his and
