Mount Olive Dedication

    Dedication of Marion Hargrove's Collection of Writings and Working Papers to the Steel Memorial Library of Mount Olive, North Carolina was held May 2, 1998.  Welcome and introductions was presented by Mildred H. Crone, President, Friends of Steele Memorial Library.  The Honorable B. R. Huggins, Mayor of Mount Olive presented Mr. Hargrove the key to the city and Proclamation declaring May 2nd as "Marion Hargrove Day."  The Mayor also presented Marion with a jar of pickles and a baseball hat inscribed with "Mount Olive, Pickle Town USA", for which the town is known.
  Marion Hargrove spoke to the crowd of some 75 to 80 people including newspaper reporters and TV cameramen.  He introduced his family that were present and said a few words about the relationship between him and Mount Olive.
  The abbreviated list of Marion Hargrove's writings and  working papers presented to the library is as follows:  1. Books written by Hargrove and relevant to Marion's work contain three books written by Hargrove, "See Here Private Hargrove", Something's Got to Give", "The Girl He Left Behind"; and twelve books pertinent to his work.  2. More than 60 Scripts (screenplays and teleplays).  3. More than 500 letters divided into categories; VIP letters (i.e.: Harry Truman, Gloria Swanson, Audie Murphy, Tony Curtis, etc.); letters with family and friends; and professional letters with peers.  4. Working files and correspondence with agents, producers, directors, and Jack Warner of Warner Brothers, etc.  5. Photos depicting special events in his career.  6. A collection of information including Hargrove and Jernigan family Histories and the service records of two of his grandfathers in the Civil War:  Sgt. Owen Hargrove and Pvt. Cader Jernigan who served together in Company H of the 20th North Carolina Infantry, Confederate States Army.
