I was born in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. But, I grew up Chicago, Illinois, along with five sisters and two brothers. Growing up in such a large family, I had to have a good sense of humor -- to make up for a lack of space. We all did funny things -- but my father said I was 'right witty."

Jerdine Nolen can't remember a time when she wasn't writing and collecting words. While she was growing up, being bored was out of the question since, if she or one of her siblings told their parents they were bored, their parents were sure to find work for them to do. Jerdine Nolen loves everything about writing -- right down to the sound her pencil makes as it travels across the page. She says that sometimes young people think its weird when she says she loves having her stories edited and critiqued by her editor. She tells them that when her editor edits or speaks to her about revising she says she feels like someone cares about her work as much as she does. Jerdine Nolen lives near Baltimore, Maryland with her husband and their two children.

Jerdine Nolen notes that it seemed like it took forever before Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm was finally published. But, it was worth the wait. She tells young people:

...things don't always happen overnight -- you do the work, and then you wait, sort of like waiting for the holidays or birthdays or seeds to sprout. She usually autographs copies of Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm pretty much the same way:

Hold fast to your dreams as you would your balloons!

Jerdine Nolen's works are filled with wonderful impossibilities and magical imagination. For example, it's amazing how an innocent Sunday-before-supper walk could lead to a baby dragon in Raising Dragons. She autographs Raising Dragons

...because dragons too seldom share our lives.
