Course name: Pre-Algebra

Broad course goals:

6th Grade Math is designed to introduce concrete and abstract mathematics by integrating topics from arithmetic, geometry, algebra, measurement, and statistics.

1)      Problem Solving: Students will solve problems, reason, and estimate while focusing on practical applications of mathematics. They will communicate their understanding of mathematics. They will use technology.

2)      Patterns and Relationships: Algebra: Students will represent and analyze mathematical situations using algebraic symbols.

3)      Rational Number Computation: Students will perform operations with whole numbers, integers, fractions, and decimals.

4)      Geometry and Measurement: Students will investigate the characteristics and properties of two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometric shapes. Students will explore coordinate geometry. They will understand measurable attributes, units, systems, and processes of measurement.

5)      Number Sense and Numeration: Students will understand numbers and the ways of representing them and the relationships among numbers.

6)      Statistics and Probability: Students will collect, organize, display, and analyze data. They will understand and apply basic concepts of probability.

What to Expect

Description of what student and parents should expect:

1)      Students will have no more than two academic tests on any given date.

2)      Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday and sometimes on Friday.

3)      Tests will be given mid-way through and at the end of the chapter.  Quizzes will be given periodically (usually after 2 or 3 lessons).

4)      Technology will be utilized in all academic classes.

5)      Students will update agendas daily in class.

6)      Teachers will utilize the agenda as a means of communication between home and school.

Description of what parents can do to help students succeed in the course:

1)      Utilize the agenda as a means of communication between home and school.

2)      Establish a definite time and place for homework and study.

3)      Review assignments with your child.

4)      Review, sign, and return your child’s weekly progress report.

5)      Monitor the completion and quality of your child’s work.

6)      Encourage your child to organize and restock his/her notebook and book bag on a routine basis.

7)      Treat school and homework as your child’s job.
