Equine Rescue Ethics Mediation Committee

Rescue Review Page

This page is a vast undertaking of information about all rescues located in the United States. We are using a pre-existing list of rescues and checking their websites to see what they do and how they do it, so we can report it here, for you.

This page is for informational purposes and is not meant to be used as a guide to judge rescues in any way. If you spot any errors on this page, please contact any listed committee member so the correction can be made. Every effort will be made by the committee to keep this page updated and as accurate as possible. There are many more categories and many more rescues to add. We hope that this small beginning will give visitors an idea of what the finished table will look like.

We need volunteers to help us gather this information. While checking websites, we were surprised at how many rescues leave out information. For example, if a rescue had no information about fostering horses on its website and all of the "available" horses appeared to be kept in a central location, then the box for "foster" will have a letter "N" in that category.

This information is not to discredit or misrepresent any rescue, organized or private. The committee really does want the list to be as accurate as possible, so please do not hesitate to contact us with corrected information. This website was started on February 15, 2006, and as of right now, no e-mail links are working on the site yet- but they will be shortly. In the meantime, there are contact e-mail addresses listed in the body of text on the home page of this site.

The committee would like to thank everyone for their participation and support and remind you that volunteers are needed to help the committee. Even if you cannot serve on the committee, please consider volunteering for the web-based volunteer positions, such as gathering information about rescues for this page.
I, Antoinette Smith, have created this website so that someone else can take it over. I do NOT want to be a part of it when sensitive information starts coming in to the committee that may need to be reported on this site. In addition, I stink as a webmaster, so someone please relieve me of these duties as soon as possible, please!

I'm working on putting up clarification for all of the categories. If one person has a question, some others probably have the same one, so I'll say that just because a rescue is not a 501c3 does not mean that they are a private rescue, hence two seperate categories there. Some rescues adopt horses out to any place in the country. Others adopt out only in limited areas. That box does need more clarifiction. What I am trying to let the reader know is whether or not they might be able to adopt.
"Disc./Grants Avail." means just that: discounts, such as half off adoption fees, or grants (for transport, etc.) are available if there is a "Y" in the box.
"Paid employees"- if the organization has them, the number, if known, will be listed. "If known" means if that information is published on the rescue's website or if the rescue notified me of the exact number. I only have one square, so I am not differentiating between full and part time employees. People who want to know more details than I can fit into a box should visit the rescue's web sites themselves. If the website mentions paid employees but does not specify how many, then there will be a "Y" in the box. I am familiar with some of the rescues, but I am not making any assumptions. Unless I get confirmation through the web site or an e-mail from an offical of the rescue itself, I am not filling in any blanks or making any assumptions, even when it concerns knowledge I believe I personally possess. Polices change, and I'm trying to make this guide as accurate as possible, given it's inherent limited space.

*** Note from Antoinette: The list is starting to shape up (above) and I hope that you can all see my vision for this page. As you can see, there are many blank spaces. I plan to get those filled in, after I get all the rescues listed. I really would like someone to volunteer to contact the rescues and fill in the blanks.

The box that says "report" refers to an idea of mine for a report from nonprofits like the one the Houston BBB asks for. It's not specific to any sort of nonprofit, so the report won't be used to recommend or warn anyone toward or away from any rescue. It's something the rescue can be proud of, and they are encouraged to put a copy of their report on thier web site.

Speaking of web sites, what little information I have, I got from the rescues' web sites. I plan to go in after the list is finished and make all the rescue names clickable links, if they have a website. I was surprised to find so little information on the web sites I've visited so far in this research, about the rescues themselves and about how to go about adopting, whether or not they are registered only in the state or with the IRS, and a dissappointing lack of educational information, to boot. As you can see, I also found a lack of any mention of horse slaughter, a fact I find particularly amazing, considering the fact that slaughter is the main threat most rescues are working against. If you have a website listed on this page and there are a lot of blanks in your grid, you might want to consider adding a little bit more information to your website.

The website is already getting a lot of 'hits', so please keep forwarding the URL. And, don't forget the few temporary volunteer positions the committee is in need of.

Thank you for your support, and don't forget to vote!
-Antoinette
