as i lifted my key-card to get into my dorm suite, i noticed a taped up paper greeting me. it introduced "the lovely ladies of suite 300" as shon the wild one, jennie the silent one, shaun the nice one and mika the sweet one. as i got into the livingroom, i broke down laughing. my roommate has printed out, cut out and taped up random sayings, words and pictures alllll over the walls! now there's decorating. i'm the silent one? i know plenty of people who know me who would boggle at that description. oh well. :)
i can't believe i've slept in my dorm room several nights in a row with not a single problem! after spending last semester on the living room couch, this is great. my room mate also tends to be woken up by the phone when my alarm is about to wake me up, so that's all good too. (although i prefer being woken up by my tv switching on VH-1, but whatever.)
today featured an advanced grammar class at 8am with an overly cheery and enthusiastic instructor. i'm iffy on how well i'll be able to keep up with this class, i'm not in love with grammar, but luckily my friend angela IS, so maybe it will all work out alright.
the teacher was absent for my magazine and feature writing class, so i spent the time on the phone with said angela instead, and discussing my views on the porn industry with danny at the office. he kept ignoring me when i explained that i am not against people who enjoy watching porn, i am simply not into porn as an industry. he even tried the old "well, prostitution is the oldest profession" bla bla, which i hate. i mean, what does that argument really mean anyways?
just because it has been going on forever doesn't make it right, you know? why would longevity necessarily make a practice okay? no, i don't think the porn industry and prostitution will ever disappear. does that mean i have to just accept, like, and endorse it? if that was the case, then i guess i should stop trying to change the situation for women so that crazy ideas like equal pay for equal work could one day be a reality across the world (awww, no more feminist jennie!) and hey, how about the racism thing, i guess it is better if things stay the way they are because they've been so for a looooong time... why change anything at all? (jennie gets off the soapbox).
i just gave up, printed out an 11 page article i happened to have saved and handed him. finaly he got my point.
i don't have all the answers. i don't have a clue where i stand on every single side-issue when it comes to major topics like porn industry, death penalty, whatever. i am learning how to verbalize what i believe better, though. i try to educate myself better by researching the topics that catch my eyes, or talk about them with people whose opinions and knowledge i appreciate, and that's about all i can do.
i'm learning to be more critical of what i read and watch. i give angela all the credit for that -- i'm not sure how it happened, but after getting to hear all her various theories and thoughts about movies she lets me watch at her house, it's rubbed off a little i think, and now it's just a bit easier for me to be aware of patterns and signals and themes in movies and stories than i was before.
i have a long way to go, but my i don't feel like it's impossible to analyze things myself anymore. well, it's not all angela, i mean, i have had 3+ years of solid liberal arts classes, so i suppose this was the point all along, to make me think and connect dots, or at least TRY. well. i won't say i'm that great at it yet, but i have at least developed an interest in analyzing shit. that's good. i think. i sure did spend enough money getting here, ha ha ha!
anyhow. so. porn industry = bad. i really think it's a demeaning industry, i don't care how many women i see on teevee pout their lips and claim they lovelovelove their job. they are selling themselves as a product, so it's not like they can say anything but. i've seen tons of documentaries with big shot porn actresses claim how they are in control of everything and they love it -- bottomline is, she's saying this on camera to a potential audience. if she said something negative, then that would impact potential customers view on her and the industry, which would impact her job negatively.
so. whatever. i'll shut up now.
i found a 53 minute long live concert with hakan hellstrom online. i'm seriously thrilled. great sounds, great quality image. thrilled. i'm trying to whine my way into maria trying to get the sound of it onto a cd. i neeeed live hakan on a cd, and i doubt there will ever be any official live hakan available. so. there you have it. bliss, bliss.
