Twenty-two religious groups were tracked, and they are used in the standings charts: Anglicanism, Baptist, Buddhism, Catholicism, Christianity (no particular denomination mentioned), Evangelical (Christianity, no particular denomination mentioned), Generic (use of words like "religion," "God" or "prayer," with no tie to a particular tradition), Hinduism, Indigenous (aboriginal), Islam, Judaism, Mennonite, Mormonism, Orthodox (Christianity), Pentecostalism, Presbyterianism, Protestantism (no particular denomination mentioned), Salvation Army, Secularism, Sikhism, United Church, and Wicca.
The total number of articles (or unaccompanied photos) analyzed was 6123. Of these, 1608 were considered to be fully about religion.
With regard to the calculation of percentages and other figures, it should be noted that documents may be counted 'twice'. For example, an article that discusses both Zen and the Pope will be included in both the 'Buddhism' and the 'Catholicism' counts. Therefore, there are several instances where total percentage counts may in fact add up to figures in excess of 100%. Space measurements were based on including the full amount of space taken up by stories which were all about religion, and half of the space for those which only contained a mention of religion.
