FAQ's:

"What's with this site? Real Audio is dead, man - MP3 is the way to go! How come you hardly change this place?"

There's a long history to this site, and I don't like changing things just because there's new fangled ways of making webpages. As for Real Audio, I still use it for a couple of reasons:

1. The download time is still pretty darn quick and the songs sound good enough. It's also great for listening at work - you can save a lot of files using a small amount of space on your hard-drive. Best of all, you won't suck up all the companies' bandwidth with these short files and the internet police at your business won't know you're goofing off.
2. I cannot pay for my own server or webspace, so I need to use free web providers. And believe me, it's hard enough trying to keep this site going the way it is now. Larger files would make it impossible.
3. Almost every computer is Real Audio compatible.
4. When the site started, Real Audio was very popular and MP3 was still a baby and I'm an old stubborn goat when it comes to outdated systems. I still have an 8-track machine that I love as much as my CD player.

As for changing the design, I like the way the site looks and works...it has sentimental meaning for me; it's kind of like a scrapbook. You don't rearrange old photo albums because you get tired of the way they look, so I don't mess with the design.

This site wasn't meant to be a source for making audio CDs...it was meant to be a way of bringing the Jem songs back to life, and always have them available to anyone who wanted to hear them. I dabbled around with higher quality versions for a while, but I found it was more trouble than it was worth (see below for further explanation). So, now we're back to the way the site originally was - nothing fancy, just the songs and the memories.

"A link I followed said there were the songs in mp3 format - but all you have is Real Audio! What's the deal?"

To be honest, I don't know why people linking to the site say there are mp3s here. There used to be some, but that was a long time ago (a couple of years is a long time on the web) and I guess they haven't updated their links. Sorry if you feel cheated.

"Where did you get all your songs?"

I've collected all the tracks for the Jukebox from various sources. Some tracks have come directly from the video soundtrack of the cartoons (with some minor edits), others came from the cassettes from the dolls, some came from recordings people made off their TV on their little ghetto blasters, others came from many other webpages.  All the tracks that were taken from other pages were originally in .WAV format and were encoded in Real Audio. Now, with the DVDs available, true digital copies can be made. Once the whole series is released on DVD, I might consider re-encoding the older files to make them sound better.

"Can you make me a copy of them?"

No, sorry I can't make copies for people. But you can buy the show on DVD for yourself. Details here.

"Is there any way I can get the remixes?"

Nope. I'm not making them available right now, but I've seen that people are sharing mp3 versions for free using file sharing programs like Kazaa, which I think is great.  Some of them also have regular Jem Mp3s too.  Check out Kazaa while you still can..you can probably find Jem videos there.

"I want to get Jem music on CD...how can I do that?"

The best way is to visit the Truly Outrageous Yahoo Egroup or the Only The Beginning one.  It's got the most number of Jem fans on it.  Join up, post a very nice message there, saying that you'd like to get a copy of the songs (tape or CD, your choice), and ask politely if anyone can help you out.  You might not get a response, but be patient and keep trying.  Another nice Jem fan might respond and get you copies of the music.  I found there are alot of nice generous Jem fans who are very happy to help out another fan.

The WORST way you can do it is buy the CDs from somewhere/somebody.  I can't stress enough how important it is to NOT do this.  I know it's tempting, but believe me..there's a better way.

Ebay usually has some jerk selling a CD set every week or so, and I just discovered someone has a site in the Jem Webring strictly for selling CD copies (I won't give them business by placing the URL here).  But I beg you...
                                                     DO NOT BUY THE CDs!

These people either got their songs from really crappy sources (just because it's on CD doesn't mean it sounds good!) or got sets from generous fans, and turn around and sell dubs of them.  AND they charge WAAAAAY too much.  Also, no matter what they say, anyone with Jem CDs made them themselves, because there has never been an official CD release of Jem music.

However, if you contact a fan and they request a small fee for the materials and shipping costs, that's ok.  However, make sure they don't charge you more than $2-$4 a CD (mailing costs are different around the world)...otherwise they are probably making money off you.  Anyone who pays $50 and up for a CD set needs their head examined.  I managed to create this site by finding the music myself and through the generosity of others.  No money was ever exchaged, nor should it have been.

If all else fails, see below on how to download them, hook up a cassette deck to your computer and tape 'em yourself.

"Can I download them from your site for myself?"

Yes, you can! Here's how: instead of just clicking on the song title, hold down your "shift" key on the keyboard and click the left mouse button at the same time. This will open a window (if you use Windows) and prompt you where to save the file. Choose what directory or hard-drive you want to save the song to, and it will save it that way. Then you can enjoy the songs anytime you like. I also encourage everyone to post them on your own site if you wish (a link back would be nice, but not essential).   If you use Internet Explorer, just right click and choose "save target as".

"Do you know when the cartoon is going to be on again?"

    I have no idea.

"Is there sheet music available for the Jem songs?"

I don't think so, but if there is, I don't know where you can find it, sorry.

"What happened to the remixes, Audiophile tracks, and all the MP3's?"

Sigh.  Long story.  Read this message for the reasons.

"Where can I find out more info on Jem?"

The best resource for finding out everything you could possibly want to know about Jem is available at the Truly Outrageous! Mailing List. Not only can you read all the online digests, but check out the Frequently Asked Questions will answer everything else.

"Who sings the Jem songs?"

Jem's voice is provided by Britta Phillips.  She's been in a few bands since, most currently Ultrababyfat, and appeared in the movie "Satisfaction".  There is a Britta fan club on the internet as well, run by Liz King.

"I read something about a Quote Medley a while back..what is it and can I still get it?"

That was a special medley sent to me by Eowyn, a Jem fan who created a mix/medley of Jem songs with dialog overtop. It was available at this site for a little while last year, but unfortunately I ran out of space to store it. Sorry, at the time it's not currently available from the Starlight Jukebox.

"What's your favorite episode and character?"

I don't have a favorite episode or character, and I haven't mentioned it anywhere because that's not the point of the site.  The goal is simply to collect the best quality versions of the songs that were featured on the show. I have also tried to keep the graphics down to a minimum (hence, no pictures), as it really slows down the speed of the site.

"Can I use some your songs on my Jem page?"

Of course.  All I ask is for a link back in return.

"What are you, a nut or something?"

No, not really.  Just when I heard the Jem theme after nearly 10 years, I was blown away by recollections of my earlier years.  I wanted to share the same experience with everyone else, and then the collector took over.  It wasn't enough to have a few Jem songs, I needed as many as I could get.  Besides, I thought it would make the site unique if I had more songs than any other.

"I still think you're a nut."

I think you ask too many questions.
