Optional: Getting Java/Netbeans/Java3d working on your home computer / laptop 1. Download J2SE v1.4.2_04 SDK with Netbeans 3.6 bundle here. (Try Netbeans 4.0 or 4.1 if you're adventurous.) Install it. 2. Download Java3d 1.3.1 here. Install it (installation instructions here). There are two versions: OpenGL and DirectX. OpenGL seems to work for many people, but DirectX may work better for older hardware.
