| Snails are definatly not a topic which everyone will agree on. With that said, here is JELs view on snails. Fresh water snails are highly sensitive to salt, therefore should you have salt in your water, perhaps snails arent for you. Also, they eat just about everything including some plants that you may have in your tanks. I havent had a problem with them eating the java moss in my fry tanks. Due to the constant munching of the snails, they will eat just about everything you can imagine off of your tank floors. They will eat left over food that your fry missed, they will eat any dead plants which would decay and foul the water and they will eat dead fry. The smaller species will not overpower a fry who likes to lay on the bottom, that fry will have time to get out of the way. When purchasing your snails, do avoid pet stores at all costs. Snails can pick up diseases in a tank and carry these diseases home to you. If at all possiable, find a fish breeder who uses snails and get them that way. If you are close you can even ask to come and see the fishroom to look for healthy tanks. Many breeders would probably give you snails because they can multiply like bunnies. If your snail lays eggs and you dont want baby snails, simply remove the eggs and throw them away. More info on snails comming soon. |
