What it isn't

This isn't my autobiography. I just wanted to put down a few thoughts about me and my motivation to create a "presence in hyperspace". All my life, I have been drawn to novelty and innovation. I just like gadgets. I'm always looking for a new way to do things. Even though I've lived long enough to realize that the odds are that the old way will turn out to be better, that doesn't stop me.

Jeff at Work

I've spend years pulling information into my computer, starting with my Atari 800 and a 300 baud modem. From there I went into online services from Compuserve and Delphi through GEnie and eWorld with, of course, a short stop with America Online. Finally, I've been using the internet and the WWW to read and research, surf and study. I guess I just wanted to try putting some information up for a change.

The first difficulty I had to deal with, was the realization that nobody is really interested. I'm doing it anyway, I guess, because I can.

As I looked more, though, at the kind of content that my web site might contain, I realized that there was at least the potential of having something useful. For example, I have included photographs and information from friends who wanted be able to share those items with family around the world. As I already mentioned on my home page, I am also using this web site as a kind of an extension of my hard drive on the internet. Finally there are intangible benefits to my efforts here at coast-range.com. I think that every so often, a person needs to do something that they've never done before. At least, I am like that. I need that feeling of trying something so different, learning something so new, that I recapture the feeling of disorientation and wonderment that I felt years ago as a student. I like the confusion coupled with the satisfaction of identifying and solving new problems.

Old dogs can learn new tricks. It is good for us.
