Thursday & Friday, June 5 & 6, 2003 Rock Im Park Festival in Nurnberg, Germany |

Quote of the Day: "Welcome to shitty Germany."

Eric and I left Norfolk at 2 pm on Thursday...pick up Gooch in Baltimore...we had a layover in Iceland...there wasn't too much to see in Iceland except for green mud all around the airport...Gooch paid $2.75 in the Iceland airport for a flat coke with no ice...4300 miles and 18 hours later, we arrived in Frankfurt. Since we felt totally smelly and scuzzy, we took a shower in the Frankfurt airport for 6 Euros, picked up the rental car (which we later named "Helga"), and headed for the Rock Im Park festival in Nurnberg.

Traffic was terrible and we ended up getting to Nurnberg very late. Finding a parking spot was impossible. Apparently, Germany has yet to grasp the concept of large paved parking lots near major venues. We saw many cars parked on sidewalks, side of the road, etc., so we eventually found a parking spot off the side the road.

Rock Im Park definitely had a festival/Woodstock atmosphere. There were a lot of tents set up. Rock Im Park is a 3-day festival and apparently many people were already in town. We saw tons of trash everywhere. Welcome to shitty Germany! Almost everyone we saw was drunk/drinking a beer. We get our tickets and briefly meet up with Gerben and Elvis (our Eurotrash friends). We didn't really have time to do anything else because we heard Metallica start the show by playing Hit the Lights, so we rushed to our seats. Our seats weren't the greatest, but we weren't complaining. A couple of things that I realized as the show went on - (1) European crowds are definitely more vocal/louder than American crowds and (2) Germans get very drunk at concerts and are very smelly, sweaty, and dirty. As for the show, the setlist continued to be excellent: Hit the Lights, No Remorse, Four Horsemen, Leper Messiah, Blackened, Damage, Inc., etc. I finally heard St. Anger live which sounded great! Much to Eric's and my dismay, Metallica put Sandman and Nothing Else Matters back into the setlist. Oh well, I guess that's two songs that Metallica will always have to play. After the show, we drove 250+ miles to our hotel in Potsdam (suburb of Berlin).
