Video Production Education
A Resource for Teachers
By Jeff Dahm, High School Video Production
Teacher
Introduction for Teachers
Unit Description: This activity as published is intended for High
School Students (9-12) who communicate effectively verbally or in
writing. They should already possess basic camera and editing skills which
will be enhanced during this activity. This WebQuest is designed
to help the students develop the skills and techniques that go into producing
a documentary film. They will employ the same information gathering
and evaluation techniques that professional filmmakers and journalists
use, and in turn produce a video that will inform the viewer about the
chosen topic. They will be required to work in teams and divide the
work in a way that mirrors the techniques of professional filmmakers. They
will encounter challenges and problems that are associated with such work,
and be required to solve them in order to achieve the goal of producing
a quality end product. To do this activity well, it will take quite a bit
of class time, at least 2 weeks.
Curriculum Framework: This WebQuest has been developed
to enhance the Massachusetts English Language Arts Curriculum Framework:
Media Strand.
GENERAL STANDARD 26: Analysis of Media
Students will identify, analyze, and apply knowledge

multimedia productions, the Internet, and emerging technologies, and provide
evidence from the works to support their understanding.
GENERAL STANDARD 27: Media Production
Students will design and create coherent media productions (audio,
video, television, multimedia, Internet, emerging technologies) with a
clear controlling idea, adequate detail, and appropriate consideration
of audience, purpose, and medium.
