| Given my love for Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty, it's only natural that I would also be drawn to it's title character, Princess Aurora. Regal, elegant, and graceful, Aurora also possesses the sweetness and humility of the girl next door. While she doesn't say much, Aurora's personality shines through in how Disney animated her. One of the sweetest scenes in the film is when she meets her parents after being awakened. Following a formal curtsy, she rushes to hug her parents with all the innocence and joy of someone who hasn't seen her parents in years. Likewise, the kiss she gives to a bewildered King Hubert lets him know that she is the girl that Philip was in love with and that everything is okay. There is a purity and innocence about Aurora that makes her so endearing as she dreams of true love. Part of the appeal of Disney is that his characters embody our hopes and dreams. Mickey Mouse is the nice guy who occasionally takes one on the chin, but always gets back up to keep trying and eventually triumph in the end. Goofy is the lovable klutz who keeps trying and never gets down, even when he doesn't succeed. In this tradition, Aurora embodies our hopes and dreams of falling in love forever. |
