What’s New in Return of the Jedi Special Edition?

New shots added, old shots fine-tuned, and twenty-year-old footage combined with state-of-the-art computer graphics make the Return of the Jedi Special Edition a new look at a familiar universe.

 

 

The Sarlacc Pit

In the Dune Sea - a CG beak and tentacles have been added to the original four perf photography of the Sarlacc in the Pit of Carkoon, in the above and below frames. One of Jabba's henchmen struggles against the Sarlacc. The tentacle wrapped around the henchman was part of the original photography. The beak and waving tentacle on screen right are new CG elements. Lando Calrissian is pulled toward the Sarlacc. The tentacle wrapped around Lando was part of the original photography. The beak and waving tentacle on screen right are new CG elements.

Sy Snootles

Before - Live action plate photography of a re-created portion of Jabba's Palace set, including costumed extras and a hand-and-mechanically-puppeteered Rappertunie. After - A CG Sy Snootles and a CG Joh Yowza were added to the new plate photography of a recreated portion of Jabba's palace set. Original photography of Max Rebo and of Oola were also composited with the new plate. A computer graphics Sy Snootles was added to the new live action plate photography of a re-created portion of Jabba's Palace set, including the costumed backup singers. End Celebration

The Jedi ending celebration in Cloud City on Bespin is comprised of a new digital matte painting of the city, 3D computer graphics Cloud Car models and newly filmed blue screen extras elements. The above and below frames show the new effects for the Jedi ending celebration in Mos Eisley. A new 2-1/2 D digital matte painting of the city, a computer graphics Skyhopper model and newly filmed blue screen extras elements are included.

Ewok Celebration

Both scenes display new digital matte paintings of the Ewok ending celebration combined with new blue screen Ewok elements.

Coruscant

The view of Coruscant during the Jedi ending Celebration includes digital matte paintings and digitally-enhanced miniature photography of the buildings, a digital matte painting of the distant city elements, a 3D computer graphics air bus and landing platform, 3D computer graphics air taxis and 3D computer graphics confetti. This view of Coruscant includes digital matte paintings and digitally-enhanced miniature photography of the buildings, a miniature model of the Emperor statue filmed with motion control, a 3D computer graphics model of the plaza, 3D computer graphics extras in the plaza, blue screen motion control photography of the foreground extras, a 3D computer graphics air taxi, and 3D computer graphics confetti. In this final view of Coruscant, digital matte paintings of the buildings and sky, 3D CG air taxis and plate photography of fireworks are included.
