Chinese

Gulf Royal - Royal Crown Off Prince Abdullah Street Tel: 665 3335

The largest Chinese restaurant in the Kingdom can be found just off Prince Abdullah Street, a short way west of the junction with Madinah Road.  The men's section is laid out in traditional style but the family section is set out in a series of 24 private rooms.  For an extra special event there are two VIP rooms with adjoining toilet facilities, a banquet hall for up to 200 and a well equipped children's playroom.

Other branches of the consistently good Gulf Royal are:

Uptown Middle East Center on Palestine Street at junction with Prince Fahd Street (O5) Tel: 672 2821

Tradition behind the Pepsi Factory on Tahlia Street at the junction with Madinah Road (M5) Tel: 660 6704

Sea Food (O7) Tel: 667 4406

Al Andalus Street, near Al Dewan

This branch also serves Japanese and Teppanyaki

The Orchid

Could claim to be the most authentic Chinese restaurant in Jeddah with the chefs, china and décor all especially imported from China for the total Chinese experience, all at reasonable prices.

Safina (O7) Tel: 664 5266

Al Andalus Street, behind Al Dewan

A wide selection of Chinese cuisine at reasonable prices - I have never actually eaten in, only enjoyed prompt and delicious takeaways!  The menu is extensive with all the usual favourites.

Shangri-La (M6) Tel:

Tahlia Street, Galleria Mall

The dedicated entrance from the outside does not inspire confidence but the flight of stairs brings you out into the mall where the exterior of the restaurant is reassuring!  Inside, there is a pleasant atmosphere, the dark wood tables of varying sizes look out over Tahlia Street.  Service is attentive but not intrusive and the large menu verges on the exotic - but is only mid-price.  The Hot Sour Soup (SR12) was delicious and the Spring Rolls (SR2/2) were plump but not too greasy.  Main dishes average at SR30.  Meal for two with starters, main course and Saudi Champagne and service included came to SR164.

Wong Kung Hyatt Regency Tel: 652 1234 ext1148

A small intimate dining room, tastefully decorated and offering good-sized portions of delicious Chinese fare.  Expect to pay SR80-SR100 per person.  Business lunch menu is available for SR60 per head.

Xian Gong (H8) Tel: 699 2212

Sheraton Hotel, North Corniche

Perched on the top floor of the Hotel with breathtaking, panoramic views of the Corniche and Red Sea.  Enjoy authentic Cantonese and Szechuan dishes at the daily a la carte lunch from 1.00pm to 4.00pm and dinner from 8.00pm to 1.00am.  Budget SR100-150 per person.
