Spain - February 1999

We left the dreary grey skies of Germany in February and headed south to Rota, Spain.  Our host was none other than Father Joe Ferraro (whom Joseph is named after).  He had a little apartment right on the beach (not much *isn't* on the beach in Rota) and was a wonderful host even though he had an emergency at the chapel that week and had to work.

Here's Daniel having lunch on Fr. Joe's patio.  We spent the mornings walking the beach and around the pretty little town that Christopher Columbus once called home.  It was unusally chilly when we were there, but after the snow we left in Germany, we weren't complaining.  We had an interesting (to say the least) trip there and back.  I won't bore you with the details unless you want to read about it.  It's really kinda funny (now), so if you're interested in the story and seeing Mt. Etna as we flew by, you can go to it by clicking here.

This was one of the villages about an hour from Rota.  Our great tour guide, Fr. Joe Ferraro, knew all the great places to take us.

Gibralter was pretty neat.  Here's Dan and Daniel at the top with Morrocco in the background.  I wish I'd known more of the history before we went.  Much to the frustration of the Spanish, it still belongs to Great Britain.  We took a private tour up the rock.  You could see Morrocco on the African continent right across the water.  We wanted to go there on a day trip, but there just wasn't enough time.  Daniel got a kick out of the Barbery Apes, but was less than thrilled with the natural caves inside the rock that served as a protective barrier during the battles.  He was okay after he realized that it was like the Cave of Wonders that Aladdin found the lamp in.

Fr. Joe also took us to see the Seville.  It was beautiful!  We took a carriage ride through the city.

We were only in Spain for four days, but we had a lot of fun and ate  very well.
