The Family of John Howe Barrow and Caroline Eastwood
John Howe Barrow
On 18 Jan. 1844 in Lowndes Co., MS, John Barrow and Caroline Eastwood joined their hands in marriage by a Justice of Peace. Little is known about John Barrow or Caroline Eastwood prior to their marriage .

Census records show that John was born in Georgia and Caroline was born in Mississippi. John was age 46 and Caroline was age 28. In the 1850 census, John worked as a Miller in Chickasaw Co., MS. John & Caroline had four sons that were all born in Mississippi. The children were William W. age 5; James J. age 4; Charles C. age 2 and John L. age who was less than six months old.

By 1860, John moved his family to Choctaw Co., MS to farm. By then, Caroline had given John four more children, a daughter Martha E. age 8; Pleasant Henry age 6; Thomas age 4 and Robert F. age 1. Charles was not listed on the census records.

John's youngest son, Robert Franklin Barrow reported that he was 3 years old when he moved to Dent Co., MO. The 1870 census listed John as a 70 year old white male living in the Township of Dent Co., MO with his wife Caroline and the following children: W. W., age 25; P. H., age 15; T. L., age 13; R. F. age 10, all sons born in Mississippi.

Although I have not found any land records, John & Caroline were listed with a real estate value in all three census records. John Howe must have died between 1870 & 1880 because he was not listed with the family in the 1880 census. Johns family was buried at the Round Pond Cemetery in Salem, Dent Co., MO, but John was not listed in the records.

Caroline Eastwood Barrow
Caroline Eastwood Barrow was born on 5 Oct 1822 in Mississippi. She died on 20 Jan 1897 in Dent Co., MO. Her grave is at the Round Pond Cemetery, near the Round Pond Baptist Church, in West Dent County, MO.

On 7 July 1895 from Anutt, MO Caroline wrote a letter to her daughter in law, Sallie Coleman Barrow, giving a fair report of the family. She tells Sallie that she is as well as the Romans which would lead one to believe that she was in good health for her age. Caroline lived with Henry who was moving her to Victor so he could run the engine of the mill, apparently a family trade. Henry also had quite a little stock at his farm. He had horses, cows, hens & chickens and geese & goblins. Henry also has a nice littel stack of wheat and five acres of corn. Caroline is a proud grandmother because she mentions Robert Franklins children being as good as they can be to her. She would also like to see Sallie & Johnnys 2 little girls.

Caroline lived with her son Robert, and his wife Mary in the 1880 census. John and Henry were also living with the family. John had spent the last twenty plus years in Kentucky. Why was he living in Dent Co., MO in 1880? Had his father died recently?
