Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Values?
Does it seem to you that America and the entire world is
going to Hell in a hand basket? I don’t
think a day passes that I hear something on radio or TV that seems even more
stupid than the day before. I still
can’t believe that President Clinton could say that it all depends on what you
mean by the word IS. I
am sure that his mother must be real proud of him.
I also find it
impossible to believe that President Clinton could tell the nation (and his
wife) that he did not have sex with that woman and really mean it. I heard a joke the other day that hit
home. Hillary called Chelsea at college
and asked her if she had met any young men.
Chelsea answered yes, she had.
Hillary then asked her if she was having sex with any of them and
Chelsea’s answer was, “NOT
ACCORDING TO DAD”.
I grew up in the day
when we had heroes that stood by their ethics and values. My heroes were The Lone Ranger, Superman,
Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Hopalong Cassidy, to name a few. Until the day he died, Clayton Moore lived
each day as The Lone Ranger. He did not
allow any of his fans to see him act out of character. The Lone Ranger did not cuss, smoke or
drink. The Lone Ranger did not shoot to
kill. The Lone Ranger always told the
truth. The Lone Ranger put the
protection and safety of others ahead of his own. These standards were not unique to just The Lone Ranger. Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy and
Superman also held themselves to these same high standards.
Who are the heroes
of our kids today? To some kids, pro
wrestlers are their heroes. I have seen
enough of them to know that they do not hold themselves to the same high
standards as my heroes did. Today it
seems that to be a hero to this generation, you must be lowdown and dirty.
Where did we go
wrong? How could this have
happened? Could it be that in our rush
to gain wealth and riches, we have lost our soul? Could it be that we have allowed the government to remove prayer
and the teaching of values from our school?
School prayer was removed in the late 60’s. Does it seem to you as if around that time our society began its
downward spiral? Does it also seem as
if the government is attacking anyone who tries to take a stand for right and
wrong?
When I was growing
up in the 50’s, life was different. We
attended neighborhood schools and churches.
Atlanta only had 3 TV stations and they signed off the air at 11:30pm. We did not have VCRs or PCs. I could spend a Saturday in downtown Atlanta
on $2 and my mom would not worry about my safety. I could play outside all day and never once worry about my
safety. If I stepped out of line, my
father could tan my hide and not be accused of child abuse. I do not suggest that we go back in time to
the 50’s, but if this is progress, I hope our kids don’t enjoy any more
progress.
