Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Values?

Mamma was Right!

Mamma was right!  When you sleep with dogs you wake up with fleas.  Mamma also said, “Give them and inch and they will take a mile”.  That would seem to be the case today with the outcry for gun control.  Just in case you have not read the US Constitution lately, I have taken the liberty to copy the 2nd Amendment below:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

A couple of items stand out in this amendment.  First and foremost is the phrase shall not be infringed.  I am not sure what that means to you, but to me, and the dictionary, it means to encroach on somebody's rights or property:  to take over land, rights, privileges, or activities that belong to somebody else, especially in a minor or gradual way * infringing on our personal freedom.

I think it is interesting that part of the definition refers to the gradual loss of rights.  Gun control Liberals have been slowly and gradually chipping away at our constitutional right to bear arms.

At the turn of the last century, it was not an unusual sight to see a rifle or shotgun hanging over the fireplace or sitting in the corner of the living room.   I don’t recall guns being a problem then.  I wonder what was different?  Could it be that in those days of our grandparents, parents took responsibility for their family?  Could it be that they taught their kids the difference between right and wrong?  Do you think that unlike President Clinton, they knew the meaning of the word IS?

Regardless of which side you take on guns, another point concerning the fate of the 2nd amendment should worry you more.  If they are successful at dramatically changing the 2nd amendment, which amendment would be next?  Freedom of Speech, freedom of religion, freedom from illegal search and seizure, the right to a speedy trial.  All of these rights, and more, make up the Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments to the constitution.  The Bill of Rights grant us freedoms that are the cornerstone of our free society.  If you can change one of them, you can change any of them.  If you can take one of them away, you can take all of them away.

You may decide that it is OK to take away the 2nd Amendment because you don’t like guns or don’t care one way or the other.  I shudder to think that if the gun control lobby makes a deal with other groups what freedoms we may lose.  Remember the definition of infringed?  After they successfully remove my right to bear arms, what will stop them from deciding that freedom of speech is not all it is cracked up to be.

Remember what your Mamma said.
