| The word "fit" is a term much bandied about, but when considering the notion of fitness the first question that must asked is "fit for what?" There are hundreds of different sports and all of them have different requirements; the most important thing to aim for, rather than just a general level of fitness, is specificity of training. A taekwondo practioneer is not going to run in an Olympic marathon nor enter a Mr Universe body building event, so the training undertaken should not seek to emulate those who are, but ought rather to be appropriate to the demands of the chosen activity. The five 'S' s formula indicates all the areas where an athlete can improve his performance: speed, stamina, suppleness, strength and skill. All of this elements are important as each other. It is no good having inexhaustable stamina and endurance if you lack the speed & skill to score against your opponent. Likewie it is no good being really fast and skillful if you lack strength to hurt your opponent or the fitness to keep going to the end of the fight |
