"Magician Wasn't Fooled," published Aug. 11, 1987, in the Battle Creek (MI) Enquirer

It's hard to fool a master magician.

For several weeks, a special "Salute to Neil Foster" was planned at Marshall's American Museum of Magic to honor the Colon magician for his lifetime of contribution to the magic field.

Museum Curator Robert Lund, a distringuished magic collector who in the past has paid tribute to several masters of the magical art at the museum, arranged for Foster to be brought Sunday to Marshall after the conclusion of last week's Abbott Magic Get-Together.

Lund had prepared a special plaque honoring Foster as "magician, artist, editor and teacher." June Horowitz, president of the International Brothershood of Magicians, also prepared a special presidential citation honoring Foster.

Word of the event was spread secretly among the 1,200 magicians attending the annual conclave. But secrets are a magician's stock in trade, and Foster is good at discerning secrets. Foster was pleased and honored by the museum gathering, which drew a couple hundred performers -- but he wasn't fooled.

But he was still touched. "These make me feel real good," Foster told the crowd after receiving the plaques.

Before retiring from Abbott's Magic Co. in Colon, Foster -- who soon will make Battle Creek his home -- served as editor of the Abbott publication, "The New Tops," for many years. Today is he owner-instructor of the Chavez Colege of Magic and teaches magic full-time.
