Pusan, S. Korea in Oct1999: |

Pusan is a port city (pop. of 4 million people) at the Southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula. There is a subway system, but you don't see as many Western amenities as you do in Seoul. It was more difficult to find brewed coffee, for example. The buildings seem smaller than in Seoul but are built closer together. |

Pusan Harbour...you can see how the buildings are so close together and you can see an orange metal bridge leading to an island which looks like a forested hill in the background (below). |

We were walking through the fashion district (area where a lot of clothing stores are located).
The first night, we stayed downtown at an inn with no view, and heard a lot of noise from people in the next bldg and construction. It smelled musty in our room, perhaps due to fog and moisture in this area. One block away to the left is the harbour, Chalgachi fish market, and some Western places such as Pizza Hut. |

Yongdusan Park is part of the Pusan Tower complex in the middle of the downtown. This is the bell pavillion which has a lot of pigeons and children around it. The path on the way up the hill to the park is nice, with very big trees growing over the path - you can hear many birds in them. The path is peaceful and is dark with shade. Yongdusan area is crowded with happy people - some were making "pumpkin candy" on the street. The hotel we stayed at during our second night is in the very left of the picture. It was called the Royal Hotel, and had a wonderful view of the whole area. The danceclub upstairs kept us awake until 1:30am though!

This picture of the harbour and the one above with the orange bridge in it were taken from a fire-escape-type balcony at the Royal Hotel.
Chalgachi Fish Market is here in the photo, but we were more interested in a huge Herbs Market to the left of this view. You could see row upon row of boxes of dried tiny fish of all sizes. The mopeds were always being driven into crowds of people, so we were not accustomed to that. |

We liked Pusan and enjoyed our trip to Pomosa Temple(North of Pusan). However, a man harassed us while we were waiting for our train home. He wanted money - there were some unsavory homeless people outside the train station. |
