Commencement Weekend (5.24.03-5.26.03) |
I guess we'll start, somewhat illogically at the endCommencement Day. Here I am processing through the SM common room, minus drenched robe and cap, right behind Liz, as an angry, angry man glares at the camera. |
Luke's family friend Pat, my dad, and Luke's dad laugh it up while waiting for the graduates to get into the dining hall. |
Here I am shaking Master K's hand as Mister K and Evie look on. |
Rewind to a few hours earlier on Old Campuswell, actually, I'm lying... Because our ceremony was rained out, these photos are from Commencement '02 (I was in the press box covering the eventfor the Herald so I was in a better position to take photos anyway). That's New York's Governor Pataki giving the address. |
Another shot from the press box. |
Something mysterious prompted me to take this photo of the Yale School of Medicine flag last yearI guess I'll be seeing a lot more of it soon. |
Okay, last random shot of graduates, I promise (this is again the Class of '02, but you get the picture...) |
Rewind 24 hours more to Class Dayhere you can clearly see Justein Chenberger's stylich blue and white (Yale colors) yarmulke, "borrowed" from Slifka for me by R-squared. To my left, the lovely Miye wearing her thug skull cap. |
Continuing with the Jewish theme, this is a photo of the Luk and Chen families outside Slifka immediately after Bagel Brunch. I'm wearing the yarmulke again, and the photo was taken by Jonathan L. Katz. |
Another photo of us outside Slifka, this time courtesy of Senwung's mom, Mrs. Luk. |
Me performing some Beethoven sonatas with the amazing Dawn Chan at Master K's reception for the parents following Class Day, again courtesy of Mrs. Luk. |
 Same shot, different angle. |
My family gorging ourselves on delicious, delicious food at East Buffet... of course we went to a buffet for our graduation dinner... would you expect any less of us?? I seem to be the only one actually looking at the camera in this one. |
My family with President Levin and wife Professor Jane Levin. Sadly we forgot to snap a photo with my hero, Dean Brodhead, but I'll try to sneak into Commons in 5 years when I'm graduating from med school and get the coveted shot then. |

Senior Dinner (4.29.03, 5-7 p.m.) |
Ah, the poorly disguised Silliman dining hall! Still, it was a nice gesture. Here's a table of crazies (clockwise from bottom left: Mike Mackenzie, Don, a barely visible Katie Aldrich, David Flugman, John Johnson, Eric Malzer (with camera) Molly Christian, Mike Ettananni). |
And a view of the whole dining hall. There were some crazy toasts that night! Including one to... shrimp hatcheries? And Silliman-TD couples?? What were you people thinking??? |
And here's my tableclockwise from bottom left, Luke, Robert, Lauren (standing), Senwung, Meridee, Lisa, Erica. |
Master K toasting with Liz... Clearly the scene was set for a night of drunken debauchery (especially when she encouraged us to take the leftover bottles of wine with us!) |
And of course, this is the resultErica slapping Meridee's ass. |
Lisa trying out Meridee's bra. |
Whoah, guess someone got a little carried away there! |

JE Chamber Players concert, 4.27.03, 8:30 p.m. |
I don't know what the pho I'm doing hereyou'll have to ask Meridee, who took the picture. I assume this is before the concert started. |
Here I am tuning my faithful musicians. |
And now for something completely different... After the concert, John, Lisby, Catherine, and I retired to Lisby's common room for some wine and hamster fun. This little critter, Hammy, may look innocent, but as soon as Catherine offered him the cork to the wine bottle, he started licking it like crazy (a hamster after my own heart)and six days later, he was dead. RIP, Hammy. |
Yale in the snow (circa Winter 2002-3) |
A view of Cross Campus and Sterling Memorial Library in the snow... How could one fail to be inspired by such a sight? |
I randomly decided to take a picture of one of those lions outside Lanman Wright. |
Cheesy shot of me on the Silliman swing. |
Music stuff ('99-'03) |
The Halfway House, performing one of their twangy country hits in the SM courtyard at Richfest 2002. |
Me and my faithful co-coordinator, Sarah, leading a Music Brunch. |
The amazing Cat on trumpet (I would imagine the only blind principle trumpet player in YSO history). |
Football games ('99-'03) |
Thanks to Senwung for this awesome photo. After our triumphant 34-24 victory over Hahvahd sophomore year, the Yalies all rushed the field. You can read an article I wrote about our victory here. I'll scan more football photos later. |

Miscellaneous |
Shortly after our senior essays had been turned in, Luke and I decided to stack all the books we had used to write them in the middle of the common room. Seated triumphantly at the top are the Yale Med bear that Luke gave me and the ridiculously fat duck that he borrowed from Suzy. |
Oh yeah, we also had a finished-with-senior-essays party, which basically just involved drinking. From left: Senwung, Anke, Robert, me, and Mike Scherzer (mutilating a draft of his essay). A warning to Yalies: the famous Rudy's event where you get a free beer in exchange for the cover page of your senior essay is all a big hoax! You have to get there at like 4 p.m. for it to work. Be aware... |
